CLIFFORD FISHWICK (1923 – 1997) was a Liverpool-trained landscape painter of great productive drive whose manifold activities included running a major West Country art college and trekking, mountaineering and yachting.

From 1958 until retirement in 1984 he was Principal of the Exeter College of Art, guiding the college through a period of great expansion and bureaucratic change. His natural magnanimity and northern warmth made him a popular leader of art education.

He also found time to raise a family and paint a prolific body of work which he exhibited widely across the West Country including at the Penwith and Newlyn Art Societies in Cornwall.

While he embraced the abstraction of the St Ives ‘School’ after a post-war flirtation with neo-romanticism, Fishwick never abandoned a feeling for the topographical nature of ‘place’. As a result his still under-rated contribution to post-war British painting enables it to be seen in a longer and broader historical context.
