Climbing in Cornwall was the first guidebook to provide comprehensive coverage of Cornish venues beyond the traditional West Penwith area. It was a collaboration between three of the area’s pioneers and built upon the climbing records of the Minions Group and Truro School Rock Climbing Club. In addition to South East Cornwall it also covered the North Coast and was the first guide to feature Lower Sharpnose Point, Pentire, Carn Gowla and other now well know crags.
The guide that firmly put South East Cornwall on the map. Written by Sean Hawken, who together with Andy Grieve developed much of the area’s harder climbing during the early and mid 1990s. The diversity of climbing covered – from deep water solos at Pencarrow Head to Cheesewring’s sport routes – was a precursor to later developments in Cornwall. It also featured bouldering venues such as Helman Tor and Downderry Beach. No other guidebook, before or since, has given bouldering in Cornwall such good coverage.
